Alex J. Berger is an associate at AGF&J. Mr. Berger passionately litigates for his clients in New York or New Jersey by skillfully handling disputes based on negligence, insurance claims and administrative actions. He has experience representing various individuals, corporations, and organizations. Mr. Berger is a quick learner that aggressively tackles new challenges and logically solves problems. Most importantly, he is committed to maintaining a high level of communication with his clients.

Prior to joining AGF&J, Mr. Berger spent over 17 years as an attorney for the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB), most recently as Director of the Sign Enforcement Unit (SEU) and the Padlock Enforcement Unit (PEU) for all five boroughs. As Director of SEU, he reviewed Outdoor Advertising Company (OAC) registrations and the legality of thousands of advertising and non-advertising signs including business, not-for-profit, and public art displays. At the same time, while Director of the PEU, he reviewed thousands of properties for compliance with New York City’s complex zoning and code regulations. He appeared regularly before the New York City Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH) and is very familiar with its process. In addition, on numerous occasions, Mr. Berger directly liaised and strategized with the New York City Law Department on Article 78 challenges filed against DOB and represented DOB before the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA) in contested land use hearings.

Prior to his public service for the City of New York, Mr. Berger was a law clerk in the state court of New Jersey for the Honorable Garry J. Furnari, Essex County, New Jersey Vicinage, Civil Division. He handled the judge’s busy motion calendar, observed arguments, and gave recommendations. He graduated cum laude from Pace Law School, the #1 rated Environmental Law School in the nation, with a Certificate of Specialization in Environmental Law. While there he earned significant roles on the school’s coveted Environmental Law Review team, its renowned Environmental Litigation Clinic, and its preeminent Land Use Law Center.
